ATS Chief Hemant Karkare. dead

Hemant Karkare (c. 1954 - 26 November 2008) was chief of of the Mumbai Anti Terrorist Squad. He was killed in 26 November 2008 Mumbai attacks. He was hit by three bullets in his chest

Mr Karkare, who was the 1982 batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, held a Bachelor of Engineering degree from Vishveshvarayya Regional Engineering in Nagpur. He also served in the Naxalite-infested Chandarpur area of the state.


Hemant Karkare was leading investigations into the Malegaon Blasts and had been recently getting death threats. According to news coverage this incident does not appear to be related, and seems he and his high officials came into indiscriminate fire and succumbed to his injuries.
