ATS Chief Hemant Karkare. dead

Hemant Karkare (c. 1954 - 26 November 2008) was chief of of the Mumbai Anti Terrorist Squad. He was killed in 26 November 2008 Mumbai attacks. He was hit by three bullets in his chest

Mr Karkare, who was the 1982 batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, held a Bachelor of Engineering degree from Vishveshvarayya Regional Engineering in Nagpur. He also served in the Naxalite-infested Chandarpur area of the state.


Hemant Karkare was leading investigations into the Malegaon Blasts and had been recently getting death threats. According to news coverage this incident does not appear to be related, and seems he and his high officials came into indiscriminate fire and succumbed to his injuries.

"Ted" Kaufman is the selected replacement for Vice-President-elect Joe Biden's U.S. Senate seat, representing Delaware. Kaufman is a member of the advisory board of the Obama-Biden Transition Project and Co-Chair of Vice-President-elect Biden's transition team.

Kaufman gained a BS in mechanical engineering from Duke University and an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. For 22 years, from 1973 to 1995, he was on Biden's Senate staff, with the last 19 years as chief of staff. Kaufman also worked on Biden's campaigns. Independently, he worked as a senior lecturing fellow at Duke University School of Law, beginning in 1991, and in a private consulting firm. In 1995 he was appointed by President Clinton to the Broadcasting Board of Governors, where he currently serves his fourth term.

On November 24, 2008, Governor Ruth Ann Minner of Delaware announced at a press conference her intention to pick Kaufman to replace Joe Biden in the United States Senate for Delaware. He will be sworn in early to mid January after Biden resigns to become Vice President of the United States. Kaufman has stated his intention to retire at the end of his term and will be replaced in a special election in 2010.

Melody Barnes Bio
Melody Barnes a U.S. lawyer. She is Executive Vice President for Policy at the Center for American Progress. She is also on the advisory board for president-elect Barack Obama's presidential transition team, and was named to be Obama's Director of the Domestic Policy Council on November 24th, 2008.

She is a member of the New York State Bar Association and the District of Columbia Bar Association. She is also a member of the Board of Directors of The Constitution Project. She received her law degree from the University of Michigan and her bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she graduated with honors in history.

From 1995 to 2003 Barnes served as chief counsel to Senator Edward Kennedy on the Senate Judiciary Committee.

She previously served as the Director of Legislative Affairs for the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and as assistant counsel to the United States House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights, and Civil Liberties..

Barnes began her career as an attorney with Shearman & Sterling.


Christina Romer Bio
She is a former vice president of the American Economic Association, a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship recipient, a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a winner of the Berkeley Distinguished Teaching Award. Professor Romer is co-director of the Program in Monetary Economics at the National Bureau of Economic Research, and is a member of the NBER Business Cycle Dating Committee.

In 2008, the economics department of Harvard University voted to offer her a tenure-track position, along with her husband David Romer, but Harvard President Drew Faust vetoed Christina's appointment (but not David's). David refused to accept the solo offer. Faust's decision to veto Romer's appointment was widely criticized. David Warsh, an economics journalist wrote, "By any measure, Mrs. Romer is one of the most distinguished women in economics." '"Early onset Alzheimer's" is the kindest explanation I have heard from anyone currently in Cambridge,' wrote Romer colleague Brad DeLong. "Harvard would seem to have a great deal of egg on its face right now," commented Portfolio's Felix Salmon.

Philadelphia Marathon Results: Ukrainians Andriy Toptun and Vera Ovcharuk Finish on Top

Two Ukrainians beat more than 7,300 participants in the 2008 Philadelphia Marathon.

Andriy Toptun completed the 26.2-mile course in 2 hours, 19 minutes, 58 seconds over. Toptun took the lead in the first mile of the race and never relinquished it. Compatriot Vera Ovcharuk made an auspicious marathon debut, finishing as the top female runner with a time 2 hours 44 minutes and 03 seconds.

Second place in the women's competition was Philadelphia native Abby Dean, who finished with a time of 2:48.52. Less than a month ago, Dean ran the New York City Marathon after suffering from hives and an asthma attack during the race.

The Rules Of An NFL "Free-Kick Field Goal"

At the very end of the second quarter in today’s Giants vs. Cardinals game, the Giants punted the ball to Arizona with 5 seconds left in the half. Arizona fair-caught the punt and then lined up for a “free-kick field goal”, which means the kicker gets to try a FG without the opposing team rushing him. There was no snap, and he got to take all the time he wanted to kick the ball.

I’ve never seen this before in my life (which is surprising considering how much football I watch), so I looked up the rules….and here they are.

What is a fair catch kick?

After a fair catch, an NFL team has the right to take a free kick from the line of scrimmage on the next play. If the kick goes through the uprights, the kicking team scores 3 points. It is also known as a “free kick field goal.”

What special rules apply?
1. There is no snap.
2. The defense must stand at least 10 yards from the line of scrimmage until the ball is kicked.
3. The kicking team may not use a tee. The ball must be placed or drop-kicked.
4. Even if time expired on the preceding play, the fair-catching team may still attempt the kick.
